15cm of powder on Whistler mountain

January 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Once again the overnight snow forecast was wrong. They forecast 5 cm and we got 15 :) I had a few epic laps of the Peak chair on Whistler mountain, including one completely fresh line down skiers right of Doom and Gloom. Just watch out for some of the avalanche debris in Whistler bowl, I narrowly missed a big chunk ( roughly the size of a fridge ), luckily I was skiing quite slow and managed to see it in time. The snow was deep and soft in most places, however on a lot of southern aspects there was a wind crust to it. Nothing to bother you in the morning, but as the day wore on, and it got warmer, the wind crust became quite energy sapping. The upper mountain was great all day. I did one run down to the valley around midday, and the last few hundred metres was packed wet powder, the kind the grabs your edges whenever possible. Some people have no problems skiing it, however I struggle a bit. There was also a floating fog layer that seemed to hang around Whistler mountain all day, however as most people say, Whistler without fog just wouldn’t be Whistler. I don’t particularly like skiing in a fog, but it is good for your technique. The good thing about the fog, was that if you were willing to wait, it normally didn’t take long for the layer to lift, or lower, and give you good visibility again.

39 cm of new snow in the last 24 hours, deep powder baby ! We have just reached the 600cm mark for total cumulative snowfall. The snow base is still around the 240 cm mark, the coverage is great, but the old rock can still be found, even on main runs. Small flurries with not much accumulation is expected tonight, then approximately 5 - 10 cm tomorrow. Looks like the winds might pick up again, so get out there early and ski the alpine while you can. More good news is that the anticipated rising freezing level next week isn’t going to rise as far as original thought. Currently they are predicting it will only reach 1200m with around 25 cm of snow, I can live with that :)
