After almost a week of no skiing, I was excited to get up there today. My lower back isn’t 100% – so I only did a half day, but it was an awesome half day. I ended up lapping Spankys and the Blackcomb Glacier (even though I intended to ski around the whole mountain) because it was just too good to ski elsewhere. LOTS of untouched powder, and even the (barely) cut up stuff was soft and lots of fun. No lift lines! I was skiing straight onto every lift
The day started off with a slight haze to it which didn’t last long, and we had beautiful sunshine until around midday – then it was a mixture of sun, cloud and fog until closing time. It was a lot warmer than I expected, which resulted in the snow becoming a little ‘heavy’ as the day went on. My friend even saw a sluff slide come down the Lower Poop Chutes (around noon) which we presume was the result of the fresh snow getting heavy in the sun. After re-reading this paragraph, it sounds like negative – but the visibility was great 90% of the time, and the snow was epic (a little heavy, but still good powder).
I would like to thank Wugmother for her reports lately – much appreciated by me, and everyone else I presume. I am glad you have managed to get some good days in lately. I read about the Peak 2 Peak being closed in the Pique today, and was going to mention it, but I see you beat me to it !
Also I would like to thank Nick from Whistler Watch – a website all about local happenings for his report yesterday. I was very tempted to head up Whistler today after reading your report, but made plans to meet a friend on Blackcomb and after our first lap through Spankys – we didn’t even think about going elsewhere. Jimbob was spot on – although I didn’t actually ski Zut Zut – the whole Spankys region was fantastic.
To finish with a bit of fun – here is today’s video of me (trying to) ski some powder in the upper section of Sapphire Bowl – you need to traverse/hike from the Blackcomb Glacier side to reach this section. As you can see though, plenty of visibility and awesome snow.
