Bluebird powder day in Whistler

January 15th, 2008 · No Comments

After what seems like a month of non stop snow, Whistler finally had a day of sunshine. It was a true bluebird day, not a single cloud to be seen and temperatures plummeted down to -15 Celsius with a high of -10 or so. Its amazing how much better you can ski when you have brilliant sunshine letting you see exactly what is ahead of you. Even with no new snow overnight, virtually every run was fresh powder. This was due to the alpine lifts being closed yesterday. Overall, an awesome bluebird powder day in Whistler.

The weather forecast for the next two weeks looks a lot like today. Plenty of sunshine, but not much new snow. Luckily the temperatures are expected to stay low, well low enough to maintain great quality snow on the mountains. There is a good chance the lower mountain will experience some marginal temperatures, meaning it could become a bit icy in the mornings.

So the powder days are over for now, and Whistler Blackcomb has a big snow base, reported at 244cm. Hopefully I will manage a day or two in the backcountry, once the recent snow has some time to settle. In the meantime, I am looking forward to some amazing sunny days skiing the resort.

I have updated the photo gallery with some pictures from today. The one on the right included in this post, was taken in Whistler’s West Bowl, and you can see the remains of an avalanche that I presume happened yesterday.
