Another awesome day skiing on Blackcomb mountain. The snow quality is fantastic, but obviously we still want (and need) more. I was a bit late getting up the lifts, but that was okay as I intended to head straight for the Blackcomb Glacier, and wasn’t far behind the first people into it. As expected it was basically untouched yesterday due to the bad visibility. Not today ! The sun was out and the visibility was perfect, combine that with no winds and a comfortable temperature of just below zero and it was just about perfect snow conditions.

That photo was taken about half-way down the glacier on my first run (of 4). The snow was deep but had a crust to it – making it extremely hard to ski – not so bad for snowboarders. I really struggled to make ‘nice’ turns, but had a lot of fun trying :) As the day went on, the glacier got easier and easier to ski , partly because it got more ‘chopped’ up, but also because the snow got ’softer’ – stilled had a crust, but it didn’t seem as ‘hard’ as before.

Proving the snow was good, is the fact I ended up doing 4 runs through the glacier. The first run I took the easy way in, but the next 3 I took the ‘Blowhole’ which was a fantastic choice, and probably the best run/s of the day. Deep soft snow, fairly steep terrain, longer than usual (ski out the bottom left rather than right) and just overall goodness.

I took a lot of photos today – mainly to show the snow coverage of some areas for future reference. So if you are interested, click here for photos of the snow coverage at the start of February on Blackcomb.

I spent the rest of my day in the Crystal zone, and found the runs to be in great shape. The snow is fantastic and heaps of fun to rip around on. Finally the ‘runs’ are getting good !! You can rip along the groomers and duck into and out of the sides without worrying about the snow being hard/bumpy/frozen etc..

The following video, is right at the end of the day and is a mate of mine cutting a corner on ‘Rock n Roll’ in the Crystal zone. Not a spectacular video (but a nice line), and I had been too busy to take a video earlier in the day. Still, it shows how soft and deep the snow was.

We spent the morning in 7th Heaven and then took the Peak to Peak over to Whistler to hit up Peak and Harmony. Conditions were great even through the end of the day as we skied right up until last chair. The forecast said +4 in the Alpine and if it did get that warm, it didn’t effect the snow much as far as we saw. Even the busier trails were still pretty good at the end of the day.

Our favorite today was Lakeside Bowl (skiers left of 7th Heaven)….we found plenty of untracked pow in the morning…you just had to dodge rocks for the upper part of it. Peak and Harmony were also good….much better snow coverage than Blackcomb from what we saw.

It sounds like conditions will be pretty good again tomorrow…there’s still some powder out there!

This makes me so jealous since I’m couch ridden from an injury, but living vicariously through the blog is pretty damn fun.

How’s the peak area? Is it still non stop moguls? This is my first season, so once it’s like that is it like that all year?

Great to hear the conditions are improving, looks like warmer weather till friday then some snow rolling in for the weekend and early next week!
Keep up the great work on the website. I threw in a donation for you Greg.

Phil, good times eh ! Glad you are getting some of it :)

Nick, sorry to hear you are still in recovery mode as the snow is pretty good. I haven’t been on Whistler for a few days now, but normally Whistler Bowl stays quite ‘mogully’ until we get a big dump , and then the moguls end up even bigger ! Not quite that bad, but yes, Whistler Bowl has often got a lot of moguls (except for early season which we missed this year).

Patrick, thanks for the donation, much appreciated ! I agree that next week might be pretty good – some new snow and coldish temps meaning the snow stays nice.
