Deep powder day in Whistler BC

January 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Today is in the running for best day of the season, so far. 30 cm+ overnight plus non stop snowfall all day resulted in an epic day of skiing knee deep powder. Even at 2pm lapping Crystal chair on Blackcomb mountain, fresh tracks were to be found. First run of the day was down Garbanzo chair on Whistler mountain, via the Dave Murray Downhill, then onto Bear Paw. Quite an enjoyable challenge skiing untouched knee deep or more snow.

72cm of snow in the last 48 hours, and another 20 or so expected in the next 48 hours. The alpine has been closed the whole time, so everyone has itchy feet waiting for the winds to die down enough for ski patrol to get up there and open it up. Tomorrow looks possible, if not Monday for sure ( in my opinion ), in which case it will be close to 1 meter of powder to play in :) Another system is due in Tuesday dumping another 30cm or more.

Whistler snow base has jumped up to 237cm / 93 in with 528cm of total cumulative snowfall for the season.  Temperatures at mid-mountain are hovering in the -5 Celsius region. Great skiing conditions. Down in the valley, the snow is more variable, with huge amounts of slightly wet snow getting packed down. This is resulting in very challenging ski conditions, as the snow wants to grab your edges as often as possible, and I recommend anyone skiing here at the moment to get as high up the mountain as possible.

Lift lines are surprising small, considering the alpine lifts are closed. I have uploaded a picture taken today of Garbanzo lift line at its worst, and it was still only a 10 minute wait.
