Here it is – April 1st 2009 and I am watching big snowflakes constantly falling outside my back door. This is not some April’s Fool joke, it is really snowing (a lot) in the valley. So much for Spring, and warm temperatures and clear ground to start riding our bikes – it feels like we are heading into the winter we never got.

Personally, I haven’t skied for about a week – various reasons. Firstly it was work related, and now I have pulled a muscle (or something) in my lower back. I have spent the last few days on the couch watching the snow come down, wishing I was up there. I probably could have skied today, but figured it would be best to wait one more day.

I have heard that the conditions are fantastic, especially above the treeline. Lots of snow, little to no lift lines (although the weekends have been the busiest of the season), minimal winds, and did I mention lots of snow ….. Overall it seems people have also been happy with the visibility. Below the treeline, it sounds like a hard packed base (due to some light rain a few days ago), but that is getting better with all the new snow on top of it.

Anyway, I will be up there myself tomorrow, so will be able to give more details.

I’ll share what’s going on up there.

I head out today about 10am. I did a b-line for the peak chair and skied Whistler Bowl. Whistler bowl typically has a lot of bumps and it was no different, though there was a solid 10cm over top of the bumps. However, the visibility was TERRIBLE!

It wasn’t so bad as you traversed under the lift to north face low and surprise, the snow was great. Fresh untouched pow.

A couple laps on the Harmony horseshoes, McConkeys and Gun Barrels were phenomenal. Gun barrels was especially great!

Sun bowl, the vis. was so bad it’s not even worth doing. It was dust over mogul crust. Not too fun! But a couple laps in the Symphony amphitheater were for sure worth it.

Glacier bowl on Whistler heading back down to the village was AWESOME too.

I was in by 1pm and it was a great day. Not too many people on the mountain either.
