Fast snow in Whistler

February 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Well a week has passed now of nothing but clear skies, and my sunscreen supply has become depleted. It has been great bluebird skiing, with a big snow base, and great grooming. It has been perfect conditions for the World Cup racing that was held on the weekend, however a lot of people (myself included) and dying for some new snow. I am not complaining about the current conditions, its just that playing in powder is more fun :)

Currently the snow is FAST, very firm, yet soft enough to get a good edge. So right now, Whistler Blackcomb has become a racing ground, with people skiing very fast all over the place. Partly the World Cup is to blame, getting people all hyped up on speed, but also the conditions are suited to fast skiing. The only problem is dodging all the ‘gates’ on the runs, especially when these ‘gates’ decide to stop just over rollers.

Still no new snow, and virtually nothing in the immediate future. Next weekend is the first sign of new snow, they are predicting a decent dump of 15 - 20 cm  for Friday (maybe the same again on Saturday). The freezing level is hovering around 1000m which results in rain the village, but nice powder in the alpine.  Lets all hope that this system delivers.

Snow base is  230cm, and from skiing around, I haven’t noticed any areas with too much rock exposured (besides from the normal).
