This past week has probably been the best of the season (so far ;) ). The snow has been cold and soft, helped along by the 11cm on Sunday night. Since then, the skiing has been great, with quality snow all over the two mountains (maybe the very lower parts have had some off times).

One weird thing, is that yesterday Whistler Blackcomb reported no new snow overnight, yet when I went up Blackcomb, there was definitely a few cms of fresh – it was an unexpected, yet pleasant surprise. Unlike a ski resort to not make the most of every snowfall.

I didn’t end up venturing into the back country, as yesterday was a little overcast and we weren’t sure of what the weather was going to do. Today would have been a perfect touring day, as the sun came out (again) so the visibility was perfect. So Colin, if you happened to go out to Oboe, any chance of a trip report?

There is still plenty of fresh snow to be found in the trees (although I am still wary of sticks and stones with out shallow 137cm base). The base should be over 200cm and should’ve been there a month or so ago….

Also the snow on the sides of the runs is splendid – light and soft and nice little clumps of it.

A few groomed runs still have that hard packed base – which is unusual for Whistler, our base is normally soft (which is why so many people love skiing here).

So, another short report, but hey, the snow is good, what more can I say :)

How much new snow was there? Maybe they only check at mid stations and rendezvous and base, but maybe it could snow over in the crystal area and not other places? I’m just thinking out loud really. Maybe, maybe not.

    Hey Greg -

Our group is sitting in the Vancouver airport right now after an amazing (and exhausting) week at Whistler. Snow was awesome, the mountain(s) are absolutely incredible. Thanks again for your updates, a great resource. Can’t wait to come back next year.

    Charlie

    Wind moves snow.

It is very possible to have ‘localized’ snowing, especially here in Whistler when there is so much terrain.
The WB snow report figures are collected from Pig Alley on Whistler. So if it doesn’t snow there, then 0 cm is recorded. They also have a plot near the Catskinner chair upload station on Blackcomb, but those numbers are kept internal. Obviously ski patrol are measuring depths all over the place, but once again – internal numbers.

Hey Charlie, great to hear you had a good time, it was the best week of the season I reckon. Next year be sure to check out my accommodation webpage ;)

Scott, yes wind does move snow :) Not often does it result in an even layer of snow though, usually it ends up in drifts.
