New Years Day on Blackcomb mountain.

January 1st, 2008 · No Comments

No new snow for January 1st 2008 :( It didn’t matter though, today was a good visibility day, although overcast, and while most people were nursing hang-overs, myself and a few others were up early to carve the freshly groomed runs. I ended up demoing a few pairs of carvers, and liked the Rossignol Zenith Z5’s the best. Since I bothered to put away the fatties and demo some carvers should give you an idea of the ski conditions. The runs are becoming very hard packed, even icy in some places, mainly due to the high levels of traffic being seen on them nowadays. It was amazing at how well the Rossi’s kept an edge, it felt like I was on train tracks. I really enjoyed the day, as it was a different experience to be on the carvers.

Snow base is reported at 168 cm / 66 in.

The forecast is getting better all the time, plenty of snow ( we should get over 1 metre by the end of the weekend ), and even though the freezing level is rising, its only temporary, and should drop back to the valley floor within a day or two. Hopefully the winds don’t get too high, as today was a bit of shock with the alpine closed most of the day due to high winds. I managed to get 2 runs in on Glacier chair before it closed, and it really was blowing a gale up the top.

Expect 15 - 20 cm overnight, with very high winds in the alpine until tomorrow afternoon, so the alpine lifts may stay closed all day. Thursday should be a great day skiing as more snow is expected and the freezing level shouldn’t rise until during the day.

Don’t forget to check out the photos section for an idea on the weather conditions. I try to update it every few days.
