While some people are busy partying, and there are a lot of them, I am enjoying the awesome skiing conditions we have here in Whistler. This last week has gotten very busy, lift lines have extended out to the ends of the gates, yet I have still been there with a smile on my face. Thinking back to 2 seasons ago, there was virtually no snow on the mountains ( then we got 500cm in January ), and this year we have 100% of the terrain open. All in all, a great start to the 07 / 08 season.
New snow was reported at 1 cm with a snow base of 170 cm. Total accumulation so far this season is 422 cm / 166 in. Temperatures have stayed fairly low, around -10 Celsius.
Light winds with good to great visibility, will turn into medium to high winds with little to no visibility as this next system hits us. Looks like a big one. The snow forecast for this next system is approaching 100 cm total, thats enough to make anyone smile. The freezing level is also set to rise, how far is the big question. Around 1000m is not a problem for this resort, any higher though, and it starts to make the alpine snow wetter and heavier than most people like. Currently it is forecast to go as high as 1500m, which would make the powder turn into wet cement. Lets hope the freezing level stays around the 1000m mark.
One last piece of advice, during the busy weeks, Blackcomb mountain receives slightly less people. So if you want the shortest lift lines possible, then ski Blackcomb.
Happy New Years !!!
