The last few days have been a little moody at the top of the mountains. The alpines have either been closed all day, or opened late. Yesterday Whistler’s alpine was closed all day, due to high winds and lots of (wet/heavy) snow. The freezing level dropped overnight back down to around 1000m, and riding the lift up today I was hoping it had dried out the snow enough (without leaving a crust) – and guess what? It did :D

Today we lapped Peak chair on Whistler, and had numerous great runs – the powder was good (although not as deep as I expected at around 10-15cm). The visibility was in and out all day as clouds/fog layers came and went, overall though, there was only a couple of times where the viz was bad enough to affect my skiing.

West Bowl West Bowl

Whistler Bowl is in fantastic shape, pretty much as good as it gets. Totally filled in with soft snow, and not many moguls to speak about (still a few and a bit of debris around). Grand Finale was awesome, as was West Cirque – which we did a few times. The video below is of Stewart skiing West Cirque. I didn’t ski the lower mountain (as I downloaded the Creekside gondola) but it was probably a bit ugly as the snow around mid-mountain was turning a bit hard packed.

I’m planning a trip from March 27-April 2, wondering how you think the snow conditions will be for intermediate/ beginner skiers.

I’ve been hearing that the lower mountain is terrible, is this true? Can they go on runs at the top of the mountain, or are they’re mostly black runs up there?

Marsha, we made our first trip to Whistler after only one day on skis and found it to be a remarkable place for beginners. We skied the lower mountain on the first morning only. It warmed up too much to ski down there after that and so we headed to the top of Whistler.

You will find great runs at the top, and probably pretty good snow too. If it’s clear, 7th Heaven at the top of Blackcomb has great vistas and some easy going beginner trails down too. Don’t worry – there are tons of beginner and intermediate runs all over both mountains and you will have a blast!

I am so Jealous. I went out to Revelstoke after the Olympics and drove all night… I arrive in Revy at 11:30 and tore my ACL And MCL by 12:30.

    Sucks so hard.

I hate to say it, but I’m actually hoping that spring comes so I can enjoy the weather without crying.

Spring skiing is my favourite too, but I’m out for 9 months :(

      Hey Nick,

Long time no hear – bummer about you knee there mate! I hope you have a quick and full recovery. At least now you have a good reason to party hard at your club crawls!

There may have been only 10-15 cm fresh on Whistler on Wednesday, but higher up at the top of Blackcomb (where nothing but snow fell on Tuesday), about 30 cm of storm snow fell, with super deep powder on the lee slopes. That extra 400 feet of elevation truly made the difference!
