Powder, Powder, Powder

February 7th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Arms up all those who are sick of powder? I bet you would find a few people in Whistler with their hands up ( not me! ). This season, although we haven’t broken any records, that I am aware of, we have been getting non-stop snow. Some people want some clear skies. Me, I am like a pig in s#$!, as the saying goes.

Today was no different, with another 18 cm overnight. Deep powder was the call of the day, and with the mountains virtually empty, it was fresh tracks all day! In fact, I managed to get 3 runs down Shale Slope on Whistler mountain, all after midday, and all were basically fresh. I crossed a few tracks, but every turn was  untouched snow. This is pretty rare, as it is normally hard to get one fresh line down that same run.

I can’t explain it, the weather was not the best, overcast, with a steady wind most of the day, but still a good day to be on the hill. The light was in and out all day, but overall, the visibility was good. The temperatures were rather warm, compared to what we have had lately, and I spent most of the day slightly over heated. So, I am a bit lost as to why the lift lines were so small, my only guess was that most people can’t handle skiing powder day in and day out, and got tired by midday.

Snow Report:

18 cm overnight, with constant flurries during the day, although only a few cents fell. The snow base has crept over 2 and half meters up to 254 cms.  The alpine is still relatively cold, hovering around -10, but the valley is warming up, even reaching 0 degrees I believe. Nothing but snow in the forecast, with at least 10cm expected every day. The freezing level is due to rise, which is un-fortunate, but long overdue. Hopefully it wont happen, but it is normal for Whistler, for a freezing level above the valley.

So, if you haven’t booked your trip to Whistler this year, all I can say is ‘Why not?, are you a skier or not?’

sure am a skier and have already booked my first trip to whistler though not for a few months yet. we are coming last week in April. Why so late I hear you say? well its part of our honeymoon and whistler seems to be one of very few places where you can still ski this late in the season… and fingers crossed we get some good skiing done the week we are there.

On that note and given your wealth of experience of Whistler….what would you say the conditons are usually like for skiing in late april? hopefully whistler keeps getting these dumps to build that base so it will last through to May at least.

    cheers,
    Neily.

Firstly, congratulations on getting married. Hope you have a wonderful day, and then life together.
Last week of April is always a ‘Who knows’ type of deal. This year is looking good, and chances are you will still be able to get some decent skiing in. There is very little, to no chance of being able to ski to the village, which means you will be downloading. Possibly from the top of the gondola, no big deal though. I would guess you will experience a lot of sunny days, and it will be quite warm up there.
Normally, the snow melts during the day, then re freezes overnight, so unless you are some kind of mad downhill racer, there is no point in uploading until around midday, once the sun has softened the snow again. I would presume you and the missus will find something to do in the mornings anyway :)
