Snow high up but rain in the valley

March 10th, 2008 · No Comments

The snow came today, but only for the very top of the mountain. From around mid-mountain down, it was a steady rain, hopefully it wont do too much damage to the snow conditions. As I type, late at night, it is still raining in the valley, and the temperatures at the top are still marginal for snow. It should get colder overnight and turn to a better snow, and also dry out the wet snow that has already fallen. The forecast is calling for 10 to 20cm tonight, with a falling freezing level, so lets hope it does. The winds are high, which should help to dry out the snow, although it will also result in a hard crust. The winds are due to stay high until the afternoon.

The skiing at the very top is still awesome, and should be even better tomorrow. Mid-mountain down is anyones’ guess, it could be ruined by the rain, or it could end up staying good. We will find out tomorrow.

10cm of snow last night, with another 10 expected tonight. 21cm in the last 7 days and a snow base of 239cm.
