Spankys opens but conditions better suited for fast groomer skiing

I had a lot of fun in the sun today. Brilliant sunshine gave great visibility, and now that the temperatures are getting cold again, the groomed runs are becoming more consistent, and therefore more predictable. I ended up doing quite a few fast laps on 7th Heaven, and also a couple around Whistler mountain.

Overall, the runs are still very hard packed, with a few icy patches to be found – also a few bare patches on 7th Heaven as the high temps and sunshine has melted a lot of the snow. Anything off-piste is rock solid and to be avoided in my opinion. Grab those carving skis and let ‘em rip !

It appeared that they opened Spankys ladder on Blackcomb today, and also the Blackcomb Glacier, as I saw people hiking into both. I will be sticking to the groomers until more snow personally……
I presume it is a case of both these regions no longer being ‘closed’ and are now just ‘beyond the ski area boundary’ but I don’t know for sure – will look into it further tomorrow. At least this means the avalanche danger is lowering, and maybe they will open some more terrain on Whistler soon (probably not the Peak though).

Also be warned, in certain areas, the snow has melted enough for rocks to dislodge and roll onto the runs – it is most prominent under the Glacier Express chair. There was a LOT of rocks scattered all over the place, and some of them were pretty big. I also saw some on Sunset Boulevard at the end of the day (which was a bit sketchy due to being in a tuck to go fast).

So once again a fun day (most days skiing are fun) but the base is dropping low, so watch out for exposed rocks again (both on and off piste).

    Cheers for the comments.

Both Peak and Symphony chairs are going to open tomorrow (Saturday 23rd). I agree that the snow up on Peak chair will leave a lot to be desired, but its great that it is open – now we NEED some new snow.

Dan, thanks for the donation. Much appreciated.

I am not sure if I am free on Sunday, are you here for a while or just the day? as I am always keen to meet new people for a run and a beer.

Would love to meet up monday or tuesday so you can give us some pointers of where the best skiing is. Beer is on me. Thanks again for the website – next to the official website yours is the best and the only one with useful posts and info and believe me I’ve looked.
