It’s been a while since I updated this blog, so I figured I had better. I personally haven’t skied lately, but have heard various reports from different people, with the overall consensus being people are enjoying themselves.
The temperatures have been a little cooler than normal, meaning the snow hasn’t quite reached that ultra slushy state very often. However, when the sun was out, the snow has been soft enough to have a great time, especially for the park rats working on their tricks.
As for the mountains, Whistler is closed and Blackcomb is open, although they expect to reverse this around May 19th (Whistler open and Blackcomb closed). Lifts open at 10am and close at 4pm. Also, the snow has basically melted in the valley, and as of tomorrow (May 4th) the ski out will be closed, with downloading on Wizard chair the recommended way down.
The forecast looks like a lot of rain for this week (we have had a lot of sunny or cloudy days lately). The freezing level is staying fairly low (for May) and it should result in a few days of snow in the alpine but definitely rain in the valley.
One more thing, the Whistler Bike Park is due to open May 16th
I have done a few rides in Squamish, where the trails are completely bare and in perfect condition. In Whistler, I have only ridden the Zappa Trails and Cut Yer Bars, and both of them are nearly bare but in good condition to ride. I have heard that Danimal North is good to go as well.

Hi I looked at the Whistler site and it says that whistler mountain will reopen may 19th for skiing/riding. Do they mean for mountain biking, cause whistler is never open for skiing this late.
Hi Sam,
Whistler used to always be the only mtn open in May/early June but when the Olympics were confirmed they started doing trail work and renos to the gondola, thus closing Whistler. Yes, Whistler will re-open for skiing/snowboarding on May 19th and I can’t wait.
Friends who skied this past weekend said it was good. Fresh snow today. Some firmer conditions especially early in the day but not as icey as it was back in Feb!
Sam, as Wugmother has pointed out, Whistler has historically stayed open until (usually) around mid-June and then Blackcomb reopens with Summer glacier skiing up until the end of July.
This year, for some reason, they are leaving Blackcomb open for now, but will re-open Whistler for skiing on May 19th (snow permitting).
So, May 16th the bike park opens, and then May 19th, the upper mountain reopens for skiing.
The skiing will be confined to Emerald and Red chairs – with the possibility of Harmony on weekends. This is what has happened in the past….
Planning to ski at Blackcomb on Wed this week. (May 6 – 09). I hear they are expecting up to 15 cm new snow up top over Tuesday? Sweet. I am looking forward to a full day of spring skiing.
Looks like you might have a really good day tomorrow – we have already received 15cm, and it has been raining all day in the valley.
Not quite spring (sunny) skiing, but it might be decent powder
May 6, 2009
I skied at Blackcomb today. It was phenomenal. 22 cm of new snow. When we started to ski out close to 3:30, it was starting to snow again. If you can make it to Whistler this week, I highly recommend it! It was magical to be skiing in all that new snow on May 6! PS. I am so tired right now. It was hard work skiing in all that deep stuff – not very often do you get that, and with so few people up there, it doesn’t get “groomed” down by all the skiers/boarders. It was also powder on the heavy side, of course, as the temps are fairly mild this time of year.
(I reposted this here, as I realized where I originally posted this was in a thread from earlier in April, so sorry if you read it twice!)
