Well I finally managed to go for a ski, and am glad I did. I only did a few laps, then enjoyed a beverage on the Roundhouse patio, but it was a fun afternoon. There was lots of snow, more than I expected. The coverage on Grand Finale was really good, which is a pitch that is a good gauge because it often show rocks and stuff. Also, the snow is super slushy and lots of fun to simply cruise around on.
Below is a short video in the Emerald chair zone, on another pitch that often shows bare patches first. It is the link between Ego Bowl and Enchanted Forest. Its mainly to show the beautiful clear skies, good coverage, and enjoying ski runs to yourself.

We skied Saturday, May 23, and I echo our dear host’s comments: it was absolutely terrific! The line-up at the Village Gondola was a mixture of skiers, sightseers (in flip-flops) and geared out mountain bikers. The sunburning started right in the line-up. At 10:15 a.m. the line-up was about 5 minutes. No liftlines at all, all day on the mountain. Lots of our American friends visiting for Memorial Day weekend.
We started on Emerald where everything was well groomed and surprisingly skiable…considering how warm it was. We were wearing T-shirts and fleeces, often rolling up our sleeves, light summer gloves…and of course our helmets. A few people were shirtless and I hope they are nursing their burns well. At the Green, going off the groomed area was a bit sticky.
Our next run was on Franz’s which wasn’t as good as the Green. After that, to the Peak where my son and I skied Whistler Bowl/Shale and husband and daughter went down the Saddle. The bowl was fabulous with small to no moguls and nice sugar snow. Everything’s still really well covered. Shale was soupier. Someone who had made it to the Peak earlier said it had been really crusty so I guess we hit it just right.
I wish we had ventured onto Wild Card earlier. It was excellent even though it looked like no one had been on it. We just love those small moguls and steep pitch.
The restaurant at the Round House was in full service swing (Pika’s downstairs is closed). Nice mellow scene and we picnicked at the tables above Roundhouse Roll. Be prepared for a line-up to download if you wait til the end of the day to head down.
My buddy skied down Olympic (note: it’s officially closed) and actually made it quite far, only having to take off his skis twice to cross service roads and walk about 200 m on the flats toward Olympic station. Not bad.
I wonder how long the snow will hold out. It felt like there were fewer rocks and bare spots now than in February!
