Right now Whistler is experiencing its ‘typical’ weather, although its not so typical for this time of year. Whistler Blackcomb is well known for its heavy snow, wetter than most resorts due it to being so close to the ocean. Well at the moment we are getting freezing levels around mid-mountain, which translates into wet, heavy snow at the bottom, with decent (but not quite fluffy) snow in the alpine. Luckily we are getting a fair bit of moisture, which means a fair bit of snow. We have officially had 14cm in the last 2 days, although not much more is expected in the near future, except for around 10cm on Friday. The bad news is the freezing level is not in any hurry to move.
So expect the lower mountain to be hit and miss, as the snow melts and refreezes constantly. Meanwhile the upper mountain, and particularly the alpine, remains in great shape although the snow is heavier than it has been all season. This makes it a little tougher to ski, resulting in tired legs earlier in the day. So don’t be shy to take 2 breaks during the day to have a cup of coffee, as it’s better to ski hard every run, then ski with tired legs at the end of the day.
The current snow base is 249cm, with the total snow falling so far this season recorded at 761cm. So by the law of averages we still have another 2.5 - 3m to come, however I predict it will be up around 3.5m So plenty of good powder skiing is yet to come.
